🛠 What is Store and Forward?
Store and Forward (S&F) is a feature on Adyen terminals that allows offline transaction processing when a terminal temporarily loses connectivity. Instead of failing the transaction, the terminal stores the payment data locally and then forwards it for processing once the connection is restored.
🔄 How It Works – Step by Step
1. Transaction Attempt During Outage
• A shopper presents a card for payment.
• The terminal detects there is no network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
• If Store and Forward is enabled, the terminal accepts the payment and stores the transaction locally.
2. Storage & Temporary Authorization
• The terminal does not contact Adyen’s platform during the transaction.
• It assumes the transaction would have been authorized (no real-time validation).
• A receipt is printed, just as if the transaction had succeeded online.
3. Connection Restored
• Once the terminal regains network access, it automatically pushes the stored transactions to Adyen for authorization and settlement.
• This is often done in a batch.
4. Post-Processing Outcomes
• If approved, the transaction is processed normally.
• If declined (e.g. due to insufficient funds), the merchant assumes the risk and cost of that transaction.
⚠️ Important Notes and Limitations
• Merchant Risk: Since no real-time authorization is performed, the merchant is liable for declined transactions.
• Time Limit: Stored transactions are usually held for a limited time (e.g. 24 to 72 hours), depending on terminal configuration.
• Card Types: S&F typically supports magstripe and chip cards, but contactless (NFC) may be disabled by default for S&F due to higher risk.
• Terminal Support: Not all terminal models support Store and Forward; you must confirm this per device type.
• Configuration: Must be explicitly enabled in the terminal profile settings via the Adyen Customer Area or API.
✅ When to Use Store and Forward
• Useful for events, field sales, or transit use cases where connectivity may be intermittent.
• Not recommended for high-risk or high-value transactions unless merchant is aware of and accepts the liability.
