Adyen provides several tipping solutions for both in-person (POS) and online transactions, allowing merchants to choose the method that best fits their operational needs and customer experience goals.

Available Tipping Methods

Adyen supports three primary tipping flows:

1. Tipping from the POS App (Tip Prompt)

• The POS application prompts the customer or staff to enter a tip amount before completing the payment.

• The tip is included in the original authorization and captured together with the transaction.

• Best suited for: quick-service restaurants, salons, spas, taxis, and similar environments.

Key benefits:

• No manual adjustment required after the transaction

• Fully compatible with auto-capture workflows

2. Tipping from the Payment Terminal

• The payment terminal prompts the customer to enter a tip before finalizing the payment.

• The tip is included in the initial authorization and captured automatically.

• Works independently of the POS app in most configurations.

Key benefits:

• Seamless experience for the customer

• Broad terminal support across Adyen devices

3. Tipping on the Receipt (Tip Adjust / Post-Auth Tip)

• The customer adds a tip manually on a printed receipt after the initial transaction.

• The merchant then adjusts the original authorization before capturing the final amount.

Important considerations:

• Requires manual or delayed capture

• Only available when pre-authorization is enabled

• The adjusted tip must remain within Adyen’s overcapture limits (typically up to 15–20% above the original amount)

Requirements and Considerations

Tip Method Requires Pre-Auth Manual Capture When Tip is Collected Automation Level

POS App Tip Prompt No No At time of sale High

Terminal Tip Prompt No No At time of sale High

Receipt Tip (Adjustment) Yes Yes After sale Low–Medium

Implementation Notes

• Tip functionality must be enabled during your integration with Adyen, either through the POS application or terminal settings.

• If using DockMaster, Valpay, or similar systems, clearly define:

• Whether tips are collected at the time of sale or after

• Whether payments are auto-captured or manually captured

• Whether tip adjustments are necessary post-authorization

• For tip adjustments via receipt:

• Submit a pre-authorization for the base amount

• Programmatically increase the authorization before capturing the final amount

• Ensure capture occurs within Adyen’s allowed timeframe
