How 1099-K Forms Work for American Express Transactions

Merchants processing American Express transactions can receive 1099-K forms in one of two ways, depending on whether they use American Express Direct or American Express OptBlue with Valpay:

1. American Express Direct Processing

• If you process payments directly with American Express, Amex will issue a separate 1099-K for all transactions processed through them.

• These transactions will not be included in the 1099-K issued by your payment processor.

2. American Express OptBlue with Valpay

• If you process American Express payments through Valpay via the OptBlue program, Amex transactions are bundled together with Visa, Mastercard, and Discover transactions.

• In this case, Valpay will issue a single 1099-K that includes all Amex, Visa, and Mastercard transactions.

• You will not receive a separate 1099-K from American Express, as Valpay acts as the processor for those transactions.

How to Check Your Reporting

• If you receive payments directly from American Express, expect a separate 1099-K from Amex.

• If your Amex transactions are processed through Valpay (via OptBlue), they will be included on the same 1099-K with Visa and Mastercard transactions from Valpay.
